Member of Technical Staff - Back End Developer (Returnship)

Job Description

The Path Forward Return to Work program at VMware is an 18-week paid returnship for experienced professionals returning to the workforce after taking time off for caregiving. The program is open to women and men who have at least 5 years of professional experience and have been out of the paid workforce for at least 2 years to focus on caring for a child or other dependent. What is the primary need, technical challenge, or problem you will be responsible for? 

We work with the latest AWS technologies and open source components. Our technology stack includes 30+ dockerized JAVA/Spring-based microservices and many  AWS services including Lambda, Kinesis, Aurora, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, Redshift, Glue, and EMR/Spark. 

 

As a member of the team, you'll have the opportunity to work with experienced, passionate, and fun-loving software engineers across Atlanta, Bangalore, Palo Alto and Sofia.

Success in the Returnship Role: What are the performance goals during the 18 week returnship you will work towards completing? 

Success in the role is defined by the ability to consistently create high quality code that addresses the business requirement, and is well tested, performant and maintainable.

  

You will develop a solid understanding of the platform and functionality it supports in the context of the larger platform. This would be demonstrated by your ability to deliver features and fix bugs, proficiency handling production escalations and being the established service owner for one or two key services. You will also actively participating in engineering design and development efforts.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis? 

As an engineer on the team, you’ll be responsible for designing and developing key features and shepherding those all the way to production. You’ll have a great team of mentors and supporters around to provide guidance or assistance, but you’ll be ultimately responsible for key deliverables. Your day-to-day will involve: 

  • Participating in design and implementation discussions 

  • Building, testing, and planning the deployment of key product features 

  • Addressing escalations or important bugs 

  • Actively contribute to a culture of high ownership, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence 

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Rekha Singamsetty, Sr. Engineering Manager who recently joined the Workspace ONE Intelligence team. Rekha’s management philosophy is to build a team culture that promotes ownership, continuous learning and results without concern of undue management oversight. She ensures that the team can work effectively on the business goals and provide guidance or assistance as needed.

Rekha expects you to collaborate and communicate clearly with other team members and cross functional teams. You will be expected to participate in the design and development of features as well as address escalations. The team works with individuals from other teams and across geographies and time zones, so you will need to manage expectations for your availability and delivery times with your teammates and with the various other teams with whom you will be working.

 

Required Skills: 

  • Contagious enthusiasm for building high-quality software products 

  • Object-oriented design skills 

  • Excellent Java coding skills 

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills. 

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in CS 

 

Not required, but useful experience: 

  • Experience developing microservices 

  • Experience with the Spring Framework 

  • Experience deploying a global service in AWS 

  • Production experience using RDBMS at scale 

  • Experience with big-data technologies
