Senior Engineering Manager - Denver - (VMware Tanzu)

Job Description

About Us

Ready to build? So are we. Come join VMware’s new exciting Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU) team, made up of products and services under the Tanzu portfolio to help customers build, run and manage their most important applications. We build applications with velocity to run in a cloud-native environment, run open-source Kubernetes with consistency, and manage our customers entire footprint with confidence to help them achieve their business outcomes.

You

You’re looking for a hands-on management role. You enjoy leading and managing engineers while staying hands on with the technology and contributing to a team.

You are looking for a collaborative environment building distributed systems that enable enterprises to focus on their business rather than re-architecting a cloud platform from scratch. You are comfortable coaching and participating in Pair Programming.

Furthering your education has always been a goal of yours. Learning new programming languages and getting to work with platform observability piques your interest. Mentoring engineers and building a great workplace culture gets you excited as well.

Us

Agile concepts are at the core of our process. We have a whole host of Pivotal Practices around Test Driven Development, pair programming, team retrospectives, technical retrospectives and continuous integration. We are excited to teach these to you and innovate with you on their implementation.

We pair in small teams of 4 - 8 people in our Denver office. We use Slack to stay connected and Zoom for pairing. We are working hard to make sure that our distributed teams function as smoothly as our distributed systems.

You'll be one of a small number of engineering managers in the Denver office and in that role will help us guide the Denver office. Collaboration is a strongly held Pivotal value. You’ll find your teammates collaborative and helpful.

Making an investment in each Pivot’s professional development improves the organization as a whole. We encourage you to go to conferences or purchase those pricey O'Reilly books - and we’ll give you a budget each year to do it.

Your Day

As the right candidate, you will mentor and guide the professional development of Software Engineers, while also working on a team backlog on a daily basis. Management of staff includes, but is not limited to coaching and feedback, performance evaluation, and compensation review.

As an engineer on the team the majority of the day will be spent with a pair. When not working on management duties your day may look like this:

9:00 AM - Office-wide stand-up to build office cohesion and start the day off together.
9:05-12:30 PM - Start pairing, tackle an open GitHub issue and open a pull-request.
12:30-1:30 PM - Lunch! Grab a bite to eat , run an errand, or join a book club.
1:31-5:00 PM - Get back with your pair and start an acceptance test for a big feature.

While that schedule does look busy, don’t worry - we take ample breaks throughout the day. Take a walk by the beach, read a book on the balcony, play a game of ping pong, or chat with co-workers at the snack bar. Sustainable pace is held in high regard. We know there is a life outside of work, we want you to be able to spend time with family and friends.

Required Skills / Experiences

We know from experience that not ticking every box on the skills sections stops many from applying. You should apply regardless of your self-assessment because we want to hear from you.
Experienced team lead or equivalent on a Software Engineering team
Professional experience as a Software Engineer a pairing environment
Ability to dive into a large polyglot codebase and contribute as you learn
